Thriving -- Not Just Surviving -- With Chronic Pain

pain psychologist

My name is Dr. David Kannerstein.  I am a psychologist in Philadelphia, PA and while I have experience with a wide range of problem areas, my passion is working with people suffering from chronic pain which I have been doing for the past 17 years.

I have worked with those suffering from:

  • back, neck, and shoulder pain
  • Fibromyalgia, Myofascial Pain Syndrome, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) also known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Type I
  • Osteo- and Rheumatoid arthritis

and many other conditions.   I also have considerable experience conducting pre-surgical evaluations for patients with pain who are being considered for spinal cord stimulators and morphine pumps.

In my experience, chronic pain is one of the most challenging problem people face.  I have personally experienced chronic pain and am aware of how debilitating pain can be.  It can be devastating in its effect on people’s lives and cause those suffering with it to lose so much including:

  • jobs
  • favored activities
  • relationships
  • even marriages and close friendships

If you are suffering from chronic pain, I want to help you not just survive, but THRIVE.

Some of the methods I use to help you and others cope with chronic pain include:

  • help you learn new ways to think about your pain
  • help you learn more effective behaviors such as pacing activities
  • teach you mind-body approaches to reduce pain and the accompanying emotional distress such as hypnosis, meditation, guided imagery, progressive relaxation, and other relaxation techniques
  • help you communicate more effectively with loved ones and others
